Those of you that have been around Android since the beginning will likely remember the Android Developer Challenges. They were app development contests sponsored by Google back in the early days when Android did not exactly have a bountiful supply of apps. Well one of the finalists in the second of those contests was Door 6 with their 3D space flight game Atmosphere: Trainer which they later refined into the tunnel racer Vacuum which is still available in Google Play and I will personally attest can be highly addictive.
Well the guys at Door 6 have continued to work in a similar vein since then and are now ready to take the wraps off their latest creation which they are calling simply “Atmo.” While you can see the fingerprints of those earlier titles on this one it is an enormous leap forward from either of those games and the team has even bigger plans for the title going forward. Door 6 sees the focus on pushing out tons of casual games to see what can grab users attention as an unfortunate trend in mobile gaming and prefers to concentrate on delivering higher quality titles with the kind of depth that a traditional gamer expects.
When it launches in Google Play early next week, their new game Atmo puts the player again in the cockpit of a spaceship (now armed with lasers) and pits them against other players in a real-time multiplayer game of capture the flag. You start on opposite ends and must raid the other side blowing up capsules hunting for their “flag” which must then be returned to your goal without getting yourself blown to bits. You receive 30 points for capturing the flag and 2 points for each kill.
As I said, this is just the beginning of what Door 6 has in mind for the game. The first features they will be looking to add on are a ranking system to allow players to level up, achievement rewards and easy game pairing with Facebook friends. Further down the line they will be opening up the world for players to explore and will be adding an economy to enable users to customize and enhance their ships with new features ranging from additional thrusters to autonomous drones and more.
Also worth noting, despite our natural Android leanings, is that the game will be available on both Android and iOS and players from either platform will be able to face off against one another. Door 6 developed the game engine that they are using in-house and may in fact look to license that out at some juncture.
I’m sure you are chomping at the bit to hear about the contest at this point so I’ll get to that already. The guys at Door 6 were interested in having some folks check out the game early and give them some feedback on it. To that goal we have the link to the apk for the full game below for you to download and try out.
Contest InfoTo motivate you all a bit they are offering up a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for the player with the highest score by 11:59 PM on Sunday night that has also left feedback on the game in the comments on this post. While we didn’t do our own review of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 it is an excellent smaller form factor tablet that delivers a full Android 4.0 experience in a package that is similar to the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet.
Two final notes regarding the rules for the contest. The contest is for U.S. residents only and in order to keep your high score running from one game session to the next you will need to use the Facebook login that pops up at the initial screen.
Here’s a few links to the apk and if you have any questions the developers should be popping in and out of here all weekend to try to answer them for you as possible.

Good luck!
Update: I’ll be trying to keep the top 5 updated as possible so you guys aren’t completely flying blind. You can also look to the Door 6 blog or Facebook page for updates as they of course are the official score keepers.

ReplyHey Ruben,
You can still play, just can’t win the Tab this time…!
Would love your feedback on the game anyway!
Best,
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyI really like it when the Devs of a product comment directly to the people.
Thank you for this contest. I will be DLing and trying this out. Thank you for the APK and coming to a great community.
Thank you AaM for hosting the contest as well.
ReplyGuess I’ll have to reactivate my account just to try and win.
Reply
You could also make a FB account for just this purpose.Only takes a couple minutes.
ReplyGood idea Sean!
ReplyInteresting, will give this a go, hopefully I can be of some help…

Hey Door 6,
Nice way to leverage the right crowd, especially with the contest. Two questions for you though:
1. Can you choose who to play against?
2. Is there any Google+ integration in the works?
Will be providing my feedback soon!
ReplyThanks for the feedback Jesse!
1) Not in this build, but in 1.1 we will have both “Join Server” and “Invite Friend” functionality so that you can easily play with your Facebook friends.
2) We’ve been looking into Google+ integration, but haven’t found anything great to do with it yet.
Good luck!

My feedback. Hope it helps!
-Love how there is no stop or edge to the environment. Makes it really seem like space.
-Are the controls backward? Took me a few minutes to get used to it.
-Does the Back key have to completely exit the application?
-Love the circular location of the other players and flags.
-No power meter?
-Power-ups would be great.
-Would be great to choose team and teammates.
-App should return to main menu when connection to server is lost.
-Change of scenery and ship type would be fun.
I think that’s it but I’ll reply if I have more. I’m sure the app is still actively being developed and some of this feedback is already in the pipeline, but I hope it helps either way.
Good luck on your success!
ReplyJesse,
Thanks again for your feedback.
The controls can be inverted, hit the wrench and you can flip each axis if you want to. We are working to see about making the back key more functional.
Power-ups are on the table, but not yet on the release roadmap. The first ship upgrades will be different ships, but maybe that will change if we get enough feedback!
Choosing teams would be fun, but the user interface could be a bit tough with the screen real estate.
I like the idea of returning to the main menu when connection is lost! We’ll put that on our hit list.
Thanks again!!

I’m going to get a bajillion points and win the tablet!

So the tutorial worked fine, but when I launch the same I get a message which reads “unable to connect to delegator”
ReplyNick, the game can be a little picky about internet connections. Make sure you’ve got a good connection, and try again. Also, if you’re on a work connection, it’s possible that they block the ports the game uses. If trying over wifi, maybe give 3G a shot (or vice versa).
ReplyAwesome gameplay. I couldn’t find a recalibration setting.
ReplyKyle,
Hit the wrench at the bottom of the screen, hold the phone at a preferred angle, and then hit Set Zeropoint. I like the idea of maybe making it say “Recalibrate”.
Thanks!!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyHere is my input.
1. This isn’t a big deal, but if you could let me rotate the screen on the facebook login, that would be great, my keyboard is too big. It isn’t a big deal, but a bit annoying.
2. I agree with other comments the back button shouldn’t shut off the game, it should go back to the menu.
3. I also agree that up down controls feel counter intuitive at first.
4. It took me three times before knowing that the tutorial auto finished and put you in the game. I think it should exit after you are done not just kick you into a game. It surprised me and I died really quick.
5. After I die, I would like my speed to stay the same as it was before. It auto puts it to stop every time. I don’t like that. I would rather it start on full speed every time.
6. Can you add a leaderboard. If I am playing this to be the best. I would like to know if my points mean anything, also maybe a guide on how you get points. I think so for it is 2 points per kill and 3 per flag return. Could I get extra for killing someone with my flag, or something. Or at least know what I am trying to do.
7. I would love power ups, like a shield, or being able to not have the colored lines around my ship for a few moments.
8. I would like objects to hide behind. Right now I just rush to the other side and shot till I see the flag grab it and rush back. I die a lot, and would love to be able to hid behind something.
9. I would like someone holding my flag highlighted differently. It is hard to tell the person you are tying to kill from the rest.
10. I would like a temporary no die respawn time, so I can figure out where I am again before I die.
11. I would also like an info page to tell the objectives. When I started the game I had no idea it was a capture the flag and i had to fly around for a few minutes till I figured out what you wanted me to do.
ReplyWow thanks for all the feedback.
For this version you get 2 points for a kill and 30 points for capturing the other teams flag and returning it. 2.1 will have achievements and other ways to earn points.
We’ll work on a leaderboard, but unfortunately didn’t have time to build one for this event.
Thanks again!!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyDo I get anything for returning my flag, or can I even return it? I usually die first, but it would be good to know.
ReplyYou don’t get a reward in points in this version, you will with the first update, but yes you can definitely return your own flag to protect it!
Thanks,
Jeremy @Door6

I’m just wondering it seems like the opposite teams flag is not always visible, how does one find their flag? Also is there a way for us to track our rank?
ReplyHello,
The other team’s flag is hidden in one of the capsules surrounding their base. You have to blow the capsules up to find which one the flag is hiding in.
Currently we don’t have a way to track your rank but we’ll post periodic updates for the current highest score.
Thanks,
Andrew @Door6
ReplyJust to follow up on that, visit our player portal @ http://door-6.com/portal and log in to view more details about your score (number of captures, kills and deaths).

Replythis game is sweeeeeeet
ReplyI’ve played through a couple of matches so far and had a great time. The game runs very smooth and I think it has a lot of potential. After a few minutes I really only have 3 big points of feedback.
1) When re-spawning it would be awesome if you were moving, even if it’s not at the full speed. The first couple of times I didn’t realize I wasn’t moving and got killed again right away.
2) Having some sort of a structure in between the bases would be great. Especially something that has tunnels or holes that you can fly through to throw of pursuit. Even just a big block to fly around would be nice. For one it would add a bit of strategy and it would add some much needed perspective. (Which would conveniently help with number 1)
3) It’s kind of hard to see the “Flag” and to tell who has it once it’s been taken.. I’ve been through 3 or 4 matches and just in the last one finally saw that it’s like a little ball.
I’ll keep playing and and come back if I think of anything else I think might help.
Keep up the great work!
Reply4) Hitting back should take me to the menu, not drop me completely out of the game. I just went back in and hit Tutorial instead of Launch (Because I’m clumsy like that), so I hit back hoping to just jump back and Launch, but I got dumped all the way out.
ReplyThere is a Return to Menu button in the settings menu (the wrench at the bottom of the screen), but we are planning on implementing the back button functionality that you described.
Thanks,
- Andrew @Door6
ReplyIt would seem using Green and Red would make the fighter ships equally visible rather than the blue which seems to blend in a little more than red.
ReplyHey Neil,
I agree with you completely, however, the images we are using for the space background are not final, and will likely undergo some changes to fix the contrast issues in order to make each color equally visible. If not, we’ll probably change around the team colors in order to accomplish it.
Thanks for your input,
- Andrew @Door6
ReplyAn interesting contest, I think I am going to participate as well.
ReplyJust a couple of things dealing with network conections, when you lose the connection could it be possible to have a button show up along with the message to let you reconnect without having to come out to the menu and re-launch?
Also, is it possible to have a signal meter so you know if you should even attempt to play, maybe something small at the top of the screen like next to the score?
Will try and help more as I get to play more. Have to find a more stable signal right now, horrible at my current location(work)…
ReplyA quicker way to retry connection is definitely on our list of todos. As far as the signal meter, I think it’s probably easiest and most reliable to check your phone’s signal before starting the game. Our screen real estate is obviously very limited, so we have to be very picky about what to put on it. Thanks for checking it out!
Ryan @Door6
ReplyCall me an idiot, but I got to 800 points before I even realized you could hold down the shoot button instead of tapping it as fast as my poor thumb could go. Needless to say, I’ve improved dramatically since discovering this.
The game itself is utterly beautiful, and I agree with everyone who requested power ups. I like the idea of a COD-esque leveling structure where you can rank and unlock new ships with new abilities (be the ship faster, more agile, stronger weapons, better defense, or even the availability to shoot a constant, laser-like stream).
I have had very few issues with the game, but choosing who to play with or some ability to communicate with teammates (even if only through pre-scripted dialogues) would be completely revolutionary for mobile gaming.
One of the most polished betas I’ve ever gotten my hands on, and I’m anxious to tell my friends to download it when it becomes officially available
Have you decided on pricing? I’m getting annoyed at everything becoming free with ads, I’m willing to pay for more features or fluidity, just ensure you allow us to. Too many games disallow that, and end up killing off their fan base with fixable lag caused from advertising.
Thanks for the feedback, and sorry it had to take a toll on your thumb. I agree on all parts about power ups and the ability to play with friends.
For pricing, the game will be free, with in-game content available for purchase. These could be anything from special power ups to higher performing ships, and in future releases, you’ll have the ability to buy parts and schematics for building ships.
We’re also not fond of ads, and wouldn’t consider them as a revenue source unless they somehow didn’t detract from the game.
Ryan @Door6
ReplyOoh, I’m really digging the part about schematics for building your own ships. Custom meters to determine how fast/powerful/shielded your ship is? Gimme, gimme, gimme!
I like the idea of paid perks, but would suggest that paying for them with real money be an option, not the exclusive method of obtaining them. Perhaps a form of in-game currency, level-obtained benefits or tournament spoils could be an alternative to the more thrifty of us, and simultaneously maintain both the quick-and-dirty gamers and hardcore earn-every-achievement gamers’ coexistence.
ReplyAgreed! Everyone should be able to earn fun stuff.
Glad you like some of the forthcoming features :-)
Good luck!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyWow thanks for the compliments, that made my day!
We are also considering a $3 version of the game (in addition to the free version) at launch that will get you special access to new content, unique upgrades — likely starting with a special looking ship.
Would love to hear what you think of that idea.
Thanks everyone!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyThat paid version sounds like a really good idea, but would be more exciting if the new content was released regularly. Like, you pay for it once, but you know you will get something fancy every, let’s say, month. Maybe some aesthetic bits could be used by early adopters to show off how early they bought the app, or something like that?
Kind of like in what I said to Ryan, though, the paid version/features shouldn’t be held over our heads and so disruptive that one feels forced to pay for it. For example, look at the success of the Humble Bundles, and their structure is strictly voluntary payment. Though you would never think that it works, it really does. People get excited about developers such as yourselves that ACTUALLY care about their work, and not just the paycheck they will receive from it.
Perhaps along those lines, you could open up member-specific maps to ensure that there isn’t some overpowered paid-player blowing away all the free-players, and discouraging them from continuing?
ReplyGreat ideas! I like the regular update idea. We definitely don’t ever want free users to feel disadvantaged. Also we love the humble bundle, typo bad we can’t let people name a price on the Play Store and App Store.
Thanks!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyOk, here is another thing I have discovered, not sure if anyone else has hit on it already but here it goes:
After you respawn, there should be like a 5 second or so grace period before someone can shoot you down. This will give you time to get your barrings and prevent “campers” from sitting back and taking you out every time you respawn before you can even get going. I was just in a match and every time I respawned, this pilot was just sitting there picking me off, happened about six or seven times in a row before I managed to escape.
Also, any way to get some kind of a damage meter?
ReplyGame is awesome! Here are my thoughts:
1) Pressing back should take you to the menu, not exit the game.
2) After respawn, a grace period would be nice.
3) Not sure if it’s just me, but when I first started playing, everything ran great. Now it seems to be choppy and laggy.
4) Power-ups would rock!
5) Would like to see a sensitivity adjustment for the gyro sensor.
Fantastic work guys!
ReplyBJ, thanks for the feedback – all great points. We are definitely getting sensitivity adjustment into a near-term update.
Thanks again and good luck!
Jeremy @Door6
ReplyGreat game I love it, very fun and addicting, can’t wait for the future updates on customizing planes etc. Keep it up
ReplyWould also be nice to have a display for shield strength.
I’ve tried a couple times and it doesn’t seem possible to steal the flag from another person if you fly by really close.
Would like to see some obstacles and maybe other things to shoot for points (like a random ship flying by or something)
ReplyYes it is difficult to steal the flag from an opponent. I find it would nice if there was a zoom out option.
Androidandme can you update the top scores please.
Thank you
ReplyMaybe pinch to zoom out?
