T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Android 4.0.3 update now available

The Android 4.0.3 update for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II is now available. The update went live at 10PM last night, but don’t expect the update to magically appear on your phone. Unlike most other Android manufacturers, Samsung will not be pushing out the update over the air. Instead, T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II owners will need to use Samsung’s Kies software on a desktop computer to download and install the update.

The Android 4.0 update incorporates the majority of the new features Google introduced with Ice Cream Sandwich, but users will have to dig to find them since Samsung’s TouchWiz UI will not look much different than the previous version. I’ve all but given up on hoping to get ICS for my Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab 10.1

Kies does not seem user friendly to me. I have to enter the model number, which is easy to find in the phone settings, but they suggest looking underneath the battery where it is listed in a condensed font and as small as can be. Then I have to figure out which model number to use because it is listed twice in a drop-down menu and each has a different second set of numbers (which isn’t the IMEI that they are highlighting in the diagram as if I’m supposed to enter that). I can’t find either of the second set of numbers anywhere.

Anyone know the difference between “SGH-T989 | SGH – T989ZKBTMB” and “SGH-T989 | T989ZWBTMB” (essentially whether I should choose K or W)?

How is this preferred over an OTA?

K = Titanium version.
W= White version

Why the color makes a difference is beyond me!

I tried updating my phone last night but wasn’t able to. If I am understanding correctly, according to T-Mobile’s website ( http://t.co/JK8Oe3kF ), you need to wait until you receive a notification on your phone in order to be able to download ICS.

Under Settings —–> Software update, my phone still states “No Firmware” so I’m assuming thats why I wasn’t able to download ICS.

Just hook your phone up to Kies and you’ll be good to go.

When it scans for Kies air server it doesn’t recognize my Mac, why not?

Look to me the look of leak rom Android 4.0.4 os droid RAZR look better then this feel stockish.

Can anyone confirm if the Holo theme is buried in there somewhere? I’m so sick of this TouchWiz crap ruining my phone. Maybe this will get the XDA developers some code to work with for a AOSP build.

I have no idea why people keep complaining about touchwiz. Just get Apex launcher from the play store or something! Plus I think touchwiz has some useful additions (quick settings in notification tray

Got the 4.0.3. update OTA today in Sweden on my SGS2, so don’t blame Samsung for not providing OTA updates, it’s likely T-mobile causing the problem.
Not sure what’s the difference from the earlier ICS version I had though. Perhaps they’ve fixed the problem with resizing widgets.Ah, nope, still not working. Useless!

My Galaxy S2 is rooted but with stock ROM. If I use Kies, will I be successful in upgrading to ICS and then just have to root my phone again?
