Yesterday was a huge day for Android developers. Just weeks after being debuted at Google I/O 2012, the source code for Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, was made available in the Android Open Source Project. But that’s not all that happened. Along with the introduction of Android 4.1, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus LTE earned back its supported title in the AOSP.
Thanks to expanded driver support, Verizon Galaxy Nexus users can now proudly call their smartphone an AOSP device. As far as how things look on paper, the Verizon Nexus has the same level of support as the GSM Nexus available through Google Play. Google developer JBQ, Technical Lead for the AOSP, is calling the Verizon Nexus’ support “experimental.” There are still some unexplained errors with Verizon Nexus AOSP builds not found in retail and GSM builds, but it’s a good start.
So what does this really mean for Verizon Nexus users? To be frank, not a whole lot. It doesn’t mean updates are going to be provided any faster by Verizon, and ROM development will most likely continue on as normal, which is most definitely a good thing. The Verizon Nexus already has a robust development community that wasn’t slowed down by the device’s lack of AOSP support.
As for Sprint Galaxy Nexus users, you’re still out of luck. It would appear that Samsung and Sprint don’t want to fork over the drivers for the Sprint Nexus, leaving it without AOSP support.

Don’t get your hopes up. Support is still experimental, and JBQ has said in the past, on the fallout of that story about dropping CDMA support, that they would still try very hard to keep support for those devices, but the very fact that they are CDMA devices tailored for each carrier would make it impossible to guarantee _future and whole_ support for those devices as they provide for GSM handsets.
Let’s cheer every single version support as it was the last. ;-)

Yeah right the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is now part of the AOSP support. Meanwhile home at the range the GSM Galaxy Nexus is getting 4.1 Jellybean update. Check thr forums or go to androidcentral.com and see all the response about the jellybean update on the GSM NEXUS. Verizon and it’s Galaxy Nexus is useless…
ReplySomething you gave in common with the nexus dick if you say it’s useless!!
ReplyHave* but since the nexus actually has a purpose it has the upper hand on you since you just take up space that could be used for something better.. so basically your the useless one. : )

Team Liquid has a nice Jelly Bean ROM for the Verizon GN on XDA and there’s at least three others.
ReplyLiquid is one of my fav roms. Name says all liquid smooth.

I’ve been using Liquid Smooth ROMs since the OG Droid days. I’ve always liked them. I don’t know why anyone who frequents sites like these would ever buy a phone like a Nexus, and run it stock. There is ALWAYS room for improvement, I don’t care how cool it is stock. I’ve never owned a phone that wasn’t improved greatly by rooting and flashing custom ROMs. I know that Liquid had some financial troubles for awhile, I’m really glad that he (and his girlfriend? I know Liquidzgrl did some ROMs and a bunch of themes) is still at it.
ReplyBetter believe it Dicky. Every Android website reported on this same thing a day ago. So now ALL the other Android-centric websites are wrong and you’re right? Hahahahaha! What a fool!
And by the way, there’s already several working versions of Jelly Bean on both the Sprint AND Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Useless? Not so much.
Smh. You really aren’t a man of your words, are you? A few months ago, you were bragging about how “awesome” Verizon was and how pathetic “Tween Mobile” is. Now T-Mobile is the best and Verizon is crap? At this point it would be best if you just shut up.

Don’t worry, in another few months or a year, he’ll be on AT&T or Cricket, or Boost, or Metro PCS, blasting the Android blogosphere with nonsense about how awesome his current device/network is, and how the previous one sucks eggs/was kicked to the curb, etc. *eyeroll* He obviously has zero idea what he’s talking about. I find it best to ignore idiots.
ReplyMaybe this’ll help pave the way for an actual CDMA Nexus device later this year.
*Crosses fingers*
ReplyI should have added, to be sold direct through the Play Store with updates direct from Google without VZW getting in the way.
*double crosses fingers*

I sadly do not think that will ever happen with a cdma device. I hope I am wrong and would love if they offer cdma devices through the play store.

I’d love to see this too! GSM just doesn’t cut it where I live. Sadly though, I don’t see a true CDMA Nexus device ever happening…
ReplyJust do yourself a favor and escape the CDMA stranglehold. You won’t regret it.
ReplyIt doesnt matter to me. I am not some loser who waits for OTA updates like some brainless monkey iphone user. I root/unlock and use ROM’s on this phone
ReplyI was a GSM user but the network sucks where I live. T-mobile doesn’t go over 300KB/s. AT&T isn’t any better here either topping out at under 1MB/s. VZW gives me the speed I require. I got fed up when because it took me 5 minutes to load a web page, even Google took at least 30 seconds to show up. So I hopped onto VZW before the unlimited data ended. VZW has 4g in my area. It was pretty much a no-brainer.
I would love to have great speeds and GSM service, however it’s not feasible where I am. I don’t regret my decision at all. I mean what good is a smart phone if the main lure is internet access and you don’t have internet connection (or the equivalent to dial up).
ReplyThis is a great step forward. It was disheartening to see it taken off initially.
ReplyI love this statement “you’re still out of luck” no offense to sprint but they have to get use to that.
Reply
No offense but luck is for losers.
ReplyAOSP is what?
ReplyAndroid Open Source Project (AOSP).
ReplyI bet Sprint’s the one to withhold support for their’s. The only difference between the Toro (VZ) and the Toroplus (S) is the LTE radio: 700 MHz (VZ) vs 1900 MHz (S), which leads me to believe that Sprint’s holding their drivers back until their LTE network launches (next week). Samsung is the manufacturer of both those radios so I don’t see why they would be the discriminator.

The problem is the damn carriers. We can only choose the few phones available by each carrier, and then we wait for ever on updates.
Carriers are dominating the Mobile world and hindering it’s progress/innovation (Even more so than the patents garbage).
(yes, i read The Verge article)
I dream of a day when Google starts its own cell phone provider service to compete with Verizon. Offer data at reasonable rates.
And, then – BAMM – watch the Nexus brand skyrocket in sales. Instant updates and purchases right from the Play store.
We would live on the bleeding edge of technology.
(a man can dream can’t he?)

So Verizon’s user who got the galaxy nexus didn’t get it for nothing after all, Google finally showing some love to Verizon’s version of galaxy nexus.
